How is income tax calculated in Australia?

Australian income tax is progressive. For FY2025–26 you pay 0% on the first $18,200, 16% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, and 45% above. Most residents also get the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO).

What is the Medicare levy?

A 2% levy on taxable income that funds public healthcare. It phases in for singles between $27,222 and $34,027 and is full at 2% above that. Foreign residents and working holiday makers do not pay it.

What is the tax-free threshold for 2025–26?

The tax-free threshold is $18,200 — residents pay no income tax on the first $18,200 earned each year.

Does this calculator include HECS/HELP?

Yes — tick the HECS/HELP box. From 1 July 2025 repayments use a new marginal system: nil under $67,000, then 15% on income to $125,000 and 17% above, with a 10% cap effect above $179,286. See the HECS/HELP calculator.

What is changing in 2026–27?

From 1 July 2026 the 16% bracket drops to 15% (up to $268 a year), and to 14% from 1 July 2027. Select 2026–27 in the calculator to preview it.
