How Overtime Pay Works
Overtime is usually paid at a penalty rate above your ordinary hourly rate. The most common in Australia are time and a half (1.5×) for the first few overtime hours and double time (2×) after that or on Sundays and public holidays — but your exact entitlements come from your award or enterprise agreement.
Overtime is taxed as ordinary income. Because it sits on top of your normal pay, it's effectively taxed at your marginal rate. Enter your base salary above to estimate what your overtime is worth after tax.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is overtime calculated?
Multiply your base hourly rate by the overtime multiplier (e.g. 1.5× for time and a half), then by the number of overtime hours.
Is overtime taxed more in Australia?
Overtime isn't taxed at a special higher rate, but because it adds to your income it's taxed at your marginal rate. More tax may be withheld in that pay, which can be reconciled at tax time.
